| 0 | | | | Simulation of a Logistic Model Many times we attempt to model the behavior of an event through an artificial simulation. This exploration will mimic the spread of a disease such as a cold. The model assumes that a person with the disease will pass it on to two other people each day.
- Each Person will represent 10 people. Each student has their own scratch paper to keep track of which of there ten people have been infected. The first student writes 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9; the next writes 10, 11, 22, ..., 29; The nexts writes 30, 31, 32, ..., 39; and so on
- Using a TI-84 calculator, choose a student a random using the command RandInt(0,N) where N represents 10 ×(the number of students in the class-1. (for example, if there are 9 students, N = 89)
- This demonstration assumes that each infected person can pass the disease to two other people each day. Press ENTER twice as many times as the number of infected people for each student. ( RandInt(0,N, M) can be used as well. eg. RandInt( 0,89,12) would return 12 random numbers from 0 to 89).
- Plot a point (x, y) where the x coordinate is the day, and the y coordinate is the number infected.
- Continue until all students are standing.
- When all are infected, Using your calculator, find a good curve fit. Which model seems to fit best? Store your model in Y1.
- In Y2 enter the command Nderiv(Y1,X,X). Graph Y2 in the same window as the data plot and Y1.
